But what does it mean to promote website accessibility and what changes should be adopted to avoid penalties and improve the user experience. And most importantly, <strong>what benefits can businesses not directly affected by the directive also reap?<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is meant by an accessible website<\/h2>\n\n<p>Accessible sites are designed to be<strong> usable by everyone<\/strong>, regardless of physical, sensory or cognitive abilities. That is, they must <strong>meet the needs of people with disabilities<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>visual<\/strong>, such as blind or visually impaired people who need appropriate tools for screen comprehension and <strong>color-blind<\/strong> people who need screens of appropriate colors to distinguish information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Auditory<\/strong>, which needs subtitles, transcripts, and audio alternatives to visual content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>motor skills<\/strong>, who are unable to use a mouse or keyboard properly and require assistive tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cognitive<\/strong>, with learning problems, attention disorders or dyslexia who need clear and well-structured content<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>neurological<\/strong>, manifesting episodes of photosensitive epilepsy at the sight of fast animations and blinking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>The goal of accessible sites is to provide the user with <strong>an inclusive experience<\/strong> by removing digital barriers. In doing so, he or she will be able to access the desired content using appropriate tools including: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the screen <strong>reader<\/strong>, software that reads the screen and translates a web page into Braille or audible speech<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>magnification systems<\/strong>, a series of programs that allow what is seen on the screen to be enlarged<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it is important to have accessible websites: all the opportunities<\/h2>\n\n<p>According to the<em>World Health Organization<\/em> (WHO) <strong>more than 1 billion people manifest some form of disability<\/strong>. And in Italy, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/iapb.it\/il-racconto-della-giornata-mondiale-della-vista\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness-IAPB Italia onlus<\/a>, there are <strong>more than 1.5 million visually impaired people and 200,000 blind people<\/strong> who need accessible sites to inform themselves or understand their content. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.isoladicomunicazione.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/perche-e-importante-avere-siti-web-accessibili.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-282499\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.isoladicomunicazione.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/perche-e-importante-avere-siti-web-accessibili.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/www.isoladicomunicazione.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/perche-e-importante-avere-siti-web-accessibili-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.isoladicomunicazione.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/perche-e-importante-avere-siti-web-accessibili-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.isoladicomunicazione.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/perche-e-importante-avere-siti-web-accessibili-1536x960.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p>Ensuring that everyone can access and navigate Web sites properly is critical in different areas because <strong>it has an impact<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ethical and social<\/span><\/strong>, with a view to a <strong>more equitable, respectful and inclusive society<\/strong>. An inaccessible site, in fact, deprives millions of people from the ability to independently access information, purchase products and\/or use essential services. <br\/><br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Cheap<\/span><\/strong>, so as to open up to a <strong>wider audience<\/strong>, which includes users with visual, hearing, motor or cognitive disabilities. According to research by the British company Click-Away Pound, <strong>more than 69% of people with disabilities abandon<\/strong> websites due to lack of accessibility, and <strong>86% said they would spend more<\/strong> if websites were easy to navigate. <br\/><br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Legal<\/span><\/strong>, for international and national adaptation. Regulations impose<strong> mandatory site accessibility<\/strong> in several the countries. Complying with the laws means avoiding heavy penalties, which can reach <strong>up to 5% of the company&#8217;s turnover<\/strong>.  <br\/><br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Experiential<\/span><\/strong>, is also an opportunity to improve <strong>information architecture, content clarity, and<\/strong> overall <strong>usability<\/strong>. An accessible site is also often <strong>neater, more intuitive, and faster<\/strong> to navigate for all users. It can therefore help increase conversion rates, trust and loyalty.    <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-medium-font-size\">Accessibility, then, <strong>is not just an obligation-it<\/strong> is a real driver of <strong>corporate<\/strong> quality and <strong>reputation<\/strong>, even for those who are not subject to the regulations.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What changes with the European Accessibility Act? (EAA) <\/h2>\n\n<p>As of June 28, 2025, all private and public digital products and services-including websites, e-commerce, and applications of those operating in the EU-will have to be accessible <strong>by meeting the criteria set forth<\/strong> in the<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.isoladicomunicazione.com\/en\/european-accessibility-act-2025-what-changes-from-june-28\/\"><strong>European Accessibility Act<\/strong><\/a><\/em> (EAA). Broadly speaking, it applies to a wide range of sectors including: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>technology and software development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>e-commerce<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>financial services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>transportation and travel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>emergency communications<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>social media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>communication with government agencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>Currently, the decree involves companies that operate in the European market and <strong>exceed 10 employees<\/strong> or have an annual turnover of 2 million euros, and foreign companies that operate in a European context. It is essential to follow both the guidance provided by the<a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=CELEX%3A32019L0882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>European Accessibility Act<\/em><\/a>, as well as international standards such as the<a href=\"https:\/\/wcag.it\/\">Web<\/a> Content Accessibility Guidelines ( <strong>WCAG<\/strong> ). Here is what needs to be done.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Alternative texts for images<\/h3>\n\n<p>Alternative text (alt text) <strong>describes the content of images <\/strong>and is essential for users using screen readers. Every significant image should have alt text that <strong>clearly explains its content or function<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Contrast between text and background<\/h3>\n\n<p>The contrast between the text and the background of the web page is crucial because it <strong>ensures readability to people with visual impairments<\/strong>, even mild ones. WCAG standards require a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for plain text and 3:1 for large text. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Keyboard navigation<\/h3>\n\n<p>Not all users can use a mouse, which is why it is important that the website be <strong>fully navigable via keyboard.<\/strong> All interactive elements-such as links, buttons, and forms-should be accessible via the Tab key. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Semantic structure of the content<\/h3>\n\n<p>Proper use of semantic HTML tags is critical to creating a <strong>clear hierarchy of content.<\/strong> Titles, paragraphs, lists, and tables must be structured logically and consistently to <strong>improve the comprehensibility<\/strong> of the site to users and assistive technologies. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Compatibility with assistive technologies<\/h3>\n\n<p>Screen readers and other assistive technologies depend on <strong>well-written, standards-compliant code.<\/strong> Therefore, the right tools must be used to facilitate accessibility of complex elements such as drop-down menus or photo sliders. <\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Statement of compliance with the level of accessibility<\/h3>\n\n<p>The<em>European Accessibility Act<\/em> requires the publication of an accessibility statement to <strong>specify the website&#8217;s level of compliance <\/strong>and any limitations. The document is to be completed according to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agid.gov.it\/it\/design-servizi\/accessibilita\/dichiarazione-accessibilita\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AGID template <\/a><\/strong>(Digital Italy Agency) and should be <strong>placed with a link in the footer<\/strong>, i.e., <strong>at the lowest part of the website<\/strong>. It must include:  <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>compliance status<\/strong> of the site in accordance with the decree<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The<strong>list of non-accessible areas<\/strong> and the reasons for non-action<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>contacts<\/strong> to report any issues or request information in alternative formats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>The statement should be <strong>updated at least once a year<\/strong> and in conjunction with any changes.<\/p>\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making your website accessible: what needs to be done and how Isola can help you<\/h2>\n\n<p>To prepare for the directive, it is a good idea to get moving right away <strong>by assessing the accessibility of the current website<\/strong>.
